Volvo Trucks FM Self-driving refuse truck. Volvo Group and Renova are testing an autonomous driving refuse truck.

Volvo Group and the Swedish waste and recycling specialist Renova, are testing n autonomously driving refuse truck for urban environment. The project explores how automation can contribute to enhanced traffic safety, improved working conditions and lower environmental impact.

This refuse truck is designed to make the driving safer in urban areas, not least when reversing. Sensors continuously monitor the vehicle’s vicinity and the truck stops immediately if an obstacle appears in its path. The route is pre-programmed and the truck drives itself from one wheelie-bin to the next. The driver, who walks ahead of the reversing vehicle, can focus on refuse collection and does not have to climb into and out of the cab every time the truck moves to a new bin.

One important benefit of the new technology is a reduction in the risk of occupational injuries, such as wear in knee joints – otherwise a common ailment among staff working with refuse collection.

The autonomous truck also offers major environmental upsides. Gearchanging, steering and speed are constantly optimised for low fuel consumption and emissions.

The test will continue until end of 2017. The autonomous truck currently being tested is fitted with a sensor system for identification, navigation, and monitoring of the vehicle’s vicinity. Most of this technology is also used in the autonomous truck for mining operations that Volvo Group unveiled in 2016. That self-driving truck is undergoing tests in the Kristineberg Mine in northern Sweden.

In samenwerking met het Zweedse afvalverwerkingsbedrijf Renova voert Volvo Trucks momenteel tests uit om te onderzoeken hoe zelfrijdende voertuigen kunnen bijdragen aan een veiligere en efficiëntere afvalverwerking en hoe de werkomgeving voor chauffeurs hierdoor kan worden verbeterd. De geautomatiseerde systemen in de test zijn in principe hetzelfde als de systemen in de autonome Volvo-truck die sinds het najaar van 2016 wordt toegepast in de Kristineberg-mijn in het noorden van Zweden.

De eerste keer dat de geautomatiseerde vuilniswagen in een nieuw gebied wordt gebruikt, wordt de truck met de hand bestuurd. Het boordsysteem controleert ondertussen voortdurend de route en brengt deze in kaart met behulp van sensoren en GPS-technologie. De volgende keer dat in hetzelfde gebied wordt gereden, weet de truck precies welke route moet worden gevolgd en waar moet worden gestopt.

Als het automatische systeem is geactiveerd, worden de taken bij de eerste stop op de gebruikelijke manier uitgevoerd. De chauffeur stapt uit de cabine, loopt naar de achterkant van de truck, haalt de container op en leegt deze. Als dit klaar is, rijdt de truck automatisch achteruit naar de volgende container nadat de chauffeur daartoe opdracht heeft gegeven. De chauffeur loopt dezelfde route als de truck en heeft dus altijd volledig zicht op wat er in de rijrichting gebeurt.
